Topic Description:

Birth Trauma: Causes and Consequences of Birth-Related PTSD
Speaker: Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, Ph.D., IBCLC, FAPA
Recent studies have found that as many as 1 in 4 women have symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following their births. What types of symptoms do they have and how do these symptoms impact breastfeeding and women’s emotional health?  In this session, you will learn about the new DSM-5 criteria for PTSD and why some types of births are more likely to cause symptoms. You will also learn how these symptoms might impact breastfeeding, and what mothers and practitioners can do to help.

Support Strategies to Prevent Suffering During Labor and Subsequent Development of PTSD
Speaker: Penny Simkin,
CD(DONA) BDT(DONA)
Discuss prenatal and intrapartum strategies to identify and relieve symptoms of trauma, with the intention of reducing the likelihood of PTSD after childbirth.

How Doulas and Childbirth Educators Can Help Mothers Who Have Had a Challenging Birth Experience
Speaker: Kathy McGrath, MSW
At the end of this session, learners will be able to describe a strategy for helping mothers who have had a challenging birth experience.

Secondary and Vicarious Trauma:  What Just Happened . . . to Them, to Me?
Speaker: Suzanne Swanson, Ph.D., LP
Distressing or traumatic birth often has an impact on birth professionals, who are both helpers and witnesses.  What the witness experiences as trauma may or may not match what the birthing woman or other professionals experience.  This session will describe secondary/vicarious trauma and will offer examples of how they occur during birth.  You will learn how to identify vulnerabilities to trauma, how to care for yourself as a birth professional during and after the birth, and how to apply the principles of trauma stewardship.

Courageous Heart: Fostering Resilience in the Face of Traumatic Birth
Speaker: Leslie Butterfield, Ph.D.
This presentation will briefly describe the elements of traumatic birth for families AND birth providers, accompanied by a discussion of the recent research regarding posttraumatic growth. We will address both preventive and clinical approaches.
