Much of clinical practice regarding "Tethered Oral Tissues" has been based on belief rather than on science. Given we are duty-bound to practice according to the evidence, Dr. Hazelbaker examines the scientific research literature on "TOTs" from the past 5 years. She answers the questions: What is new? What is good quality? What can we apply to clinical practice? What should we ignore? Participants will come away with a better understanding of which scientific research on "TOTs" should inform clinical practice.
Objectives:
The participant will be able to:
1.Describe the basic principles of good research study design.
2.Describe the major failings of “tethered oral tissues” research.
3.Discuss at least three good studies and their impact on clinical practice.

l. Study design: a review of the basics
a. What is evidence-informed practice?
b. Hierarchy of evidence
c. How to tell a good study from a bad one based on methodological considerations
ll. The “TOTS” Research: 2018-the present
a. Tongue-tie including the enigmatic posterior tie
b. Maxillary lip-tie
c. Buccal tie
d. Miscellaneous claims and considerations in the research
e. Gamechanger studies we should really pay attention to
lll. Clinical Implications of the “TOTs” Research
a. Which studies belong in the round file?
b. Which studies should we consider as a jumping off place for more research before changing clinical practice?
c. Which studies should inform our clinical practice?
Dr. Hazelbaker has been a therapist for 40 years. She specializes in cross-disciplinary treatment and to that end has taken training in several modalities to best assist her clients. She is a certified Craniosacral Therapist, a Lymph Drainage Therapy practitioner, a Tummy Time™ Trainer, a Rhythmic Movement practitioner and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She runs a private practice in Columbus, Ohio.
Her original research on tongue-tie, done in 1993, has changed clinical practice both in the USA and abroad. She authored the Assessment Tool for Lingual Frenulum Function (ATLFF) during her Master’s Degree program. The ATLFF remains the only research-based tongue-tie screening process in infants under 6 months.
